A soccer field is more than a place to play. It’s where newcomers and long-time residents connect. Welcoming newcomers in everyday spaces strengthens our communities and brings people together through shared experiences.
Every Thursday night in Pictou County, the soccer field comes alive with conversation, laughter, and the rhythm of a game that needs no translation. What began years ago as a casual gathering has grown into a welcoming space where people from different cultures and backgrounds come together through the universal language of sport.
“Here we all speak the same language, we only speak soccer.”
A Tradition of Welcoming
According to long-time player Fred El-Haddad, the group was already active when he joined in 2009, and it has continued ever since. The players represent a wide range of countries including Syria, Lebanon, Turkey, Colombia, Mexico, Ukraine, Romania, and beyond. On the field, newcomers and long-time residents alike build friendships, share in friendly competition, and find common ground.
More Than a Game
The group is open and inclusive, welcoming anyone who wishes to play. Participants come from different professions and stages of life, but what connects them is the joy of the game and the sense of belonging it fosters. For many, Thursday nights are an important way to care for their mental and physical health while making new connections in the community.
“It’s competitive, but friendly competitive. Nobody’s out to impress scouts, we’re here to make friends and get active.”
Word of Mouth, World of Players
The group grows organically through word of mouth. A neighbour, a colleague, or a friend extends an invitation, and everyone is welcome to join. More than 140 players are now on the email list, ensuring a full roster each week.
During the warmer months, games are played outdoors, where players enjoy the fresh air and sunshine. In winter, they gather at the William M. Sobey Indoor Sports Complex, keeping the game going year-round.
A Welcoming Community in Action
For newcomers, Thursday night soccer offers a familiar activity that makes settling into a new place feel easier. For long-time residents, it’s a chance to welcome new neighbours into the community. Together, they’ve created a space where belonging is built naturally, one kick, one laugh, and one shared game at a time.
